Description

The holy town of “Gangotri” is located at an elevation of around 3,050 m above sea level. A natural rock shivling located here is a huge crowd-puller for tourists and pilgrims. It's clearly visible during the winter season. According to Hindu traditions, this is the very site where Lord Shiva collected the Ganga is his matted locks. It is due to this reason that all the followers of the Hindu religion consider it highly auspicious. Entire Gangotri exudes an aura of divinity which is a real experience to be collected as a gift.

Gangotri Temple in Gangotri: The temple town of Gangotri is located just 97 km from Uttarkashi. Gangotri is believed to be the site where Ganges descended to Earth on the matted locks of Lord Shiva. The place also houses the temple of Vishwanath and Kuteti Devi.

Bhagirathi Shila in Gangotri: Bhagirathi Shila is the rock, where King Bhagirath is said to have meditated. This stone near the temple of Ganga signifies the site where Goddess Ganga first stepped down to earth.

PandavGufa in Gangotri: The PandavGufa can be reached after a trek of 1.5 km from Gangotri. This very site is believed to be the place, where the Pandavas of Mahabharata meditated on their way to Kailash.

Gauri Kund and Surya Kund in Gangotri: Gauri Kund and Surya Kund lie on either side of an iron bridge located half a kilometer ahead of the Gangotri Temple. Surya Kund is known for the Surya Kund waterfalls.

JalmagnaShivling in Gangotri: Which remains immersed in the Gangotri during summer, is one of the major attractions of Gangotri? This natural Shivling located near the Gangotri Temple is visible only during the winter, when the water level goes down. It is believed that at this very site, Lord Shiva held the river Ganges in his matted locks.

Gomukh in Gangotri: Gomukh "Mouth of a Cow" is a important holy place of Hindu religions, also it is one of the primary sources of the Ganga River, where Bhagirathi River originates after workship of lord shiva by King Bhagirathi. Gomukh is perfect trekking site begins from Gangotri to Gomukh distance about 18 km (11.2 mi). According to Purans many saints, religious people, as well as holy travellers went there to worship the place.

By Air:- The nearest airport is Dehradun which is situated at around at the distance of 250 kilometers away from Gangotri. The airport is well connected with all major cities of India. From airport you can get the taxi to reach there..

By Road:- Gangotri is well connected with all major cities of India via road network. There are various types of buses such as Volvo, AC Sleeper buses etc. Privet taxis are available from major destinations of Uttarakhand.

By Train:- Rishikesh is the nearest railway station which is about 243 kilometers away from Gangotri. You can take taxi from railway station to reach there.
